Moscow 28, a protest action took place opposite to the office of Abbott in Moscow., with 25 activists of Patients in Control initiative and other organizations demanding a two-fold reduction of the price for the life-saving drug “Kaletra”. The event was organized as a “Cabbage Festival” (the expression “to chop cabbage” in Russian is an idiom meaning “to make a lot of money”).

Based on the results of the procurement monitoring report conducted by ITPCru, the price of Abbott’s drug per patient per year in Russia is almost 3 000 USD (81 thousand rubles). Every third patient with HIV in Russia takes Kaletra; the sales volume of Kaletra in Russia totals almost USD100 million (approximately 2.9 billion rubles in 2012).

In 2012, Abbott reduced the price for Kaletra in several countries from USD1000 to USD740; Russia, obviously, was not among those countries.

At the same time, the upcoming decentralization of ARVT procurement in Russia, the aggravating epidemic with the number of new infections increasing, and the reduced federal budget for healthcare indicate a dire need for lowering drug prices.

Posters: "Abbott - kings of the cabbage, Abbott's greed blinds, Don't let Abbott into the farm, Abbott is no good for guarding cabbage" (all based on Russian rhymes and proverbs)

'Integrating AIDS service within the mainstream healthcare settings sometimes would further undermine fundamental rights to health for key populations who are often marginalised and stigmatized in the society. World Leaders and national governments MUST go beyond naming these groups in the declaration and DO anything possible to get services to them and uphold their rights. - Aditi Sharma (far right) of ITPC addressing issue of intergrated HIV services on the Panel 5: Integrating the HIV/AIDS response with broader health and development agendas, High-Level Meeting in NYC

June 8th was the first day of the High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS at the United Nations where world leaders started gathering to set the course for the fight against global AIDS for the coming years. Their past promises to achieve universal access to HIV treatment have been broken, but it is now clearer than ever that providing AIDS meds for all can turn the tide of the pandemic forever. ITPC joined other activist groups in the march yesterday in NYC.
